I read this English translation before seeing the actual performance off-Broadway which was entirely in Yiddish. Despite the play having simultaneous English supertitles, having preread the script was still of inestimable help in allowing me to get immersed in the acting.Further, if you have any interest in late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century Jewish culture in Russia and New York, the preface by Abraham Cahan, founder of "The Forward", is excellent as an historical introduction.

The God of Vengeance Drama in Three Acts Sholem Asch 9781357051228 Books Reviews
great book
Saw the play based on this play and it was so beautiful and intriguing I had to read the original. It’s a beautiful piece of writing.
meh, its weird on a kindle
Unbelievable how contemporary this is. Way ahead of its time.
A well written play, based on the Allier version, but reset in Brooklyn after the turn. Of the century with all the moral passions of the original, in a sensitive and very enjoyable adaptation.
Powerful, elemental play with universal themes and sharply drawn characters. The plot is clearly told with many poignant moments in a clear context of an European Jewish Community in late 1800s. The central familial drama is compelling, the tender love scenes moving, and the climax cathartic.
I only heard the name of Sholom Asch before and I knew he was a Jewish playwrite. But I had no idea of the power of his work or it's dramatic quality. This play was mentioned by an acting teacher and I wanted to read it, so I bought the play. I absolutely loved it !!! And I loved the fact that the society of it's day had to have the play closed down for including --- oh, how shocking --- a lesbian romance. It challenged tradition at a time that that was not a safe thing to do, and the hypocrisy surrounding it. But, best of all, it is a haunting, poetic, play with a sense of justice which we no longer experience in our computerized, synthetic society nowadays. In the opinion of this neophyte - This is a powerful drama of the genre of Arthur Miller and I thoroughly loved it. I would jump at the chance to see it on the boards.
